A People Sent to Share God’s Welcome

John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

Summary God’s welcome is not something we keep inside our church walls. It is a gift we are called to carry into every place we go.

Dear Beloved,

Over the past few weeks, I have preached about becoming “A People Sent to Share God’s Welcome.” But what does that look like in our everyday lives?

A safe place is not a place where everyone agrees or difficult conversations never happen. It is a community where people are treated with dignity, listened to with respect, and allowed to be fully human. It is a place where people can belong without hiding who they are or leaving their questions at the door.

God is calling us to carry that kind of welcome into our homes, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, friendships, volunteer organizations, and communities.

Taking God’s welcome into everyday life does not require a formal ministry. It happens through small, intentional choices that help people feel seen, safe, and valued. Here are a few ways we can begin:

• Learn someone’s name. Notice the cashier, custodian, new coworker, quiet neighbor, or person standing alone.

• Listen without preparing your response. Give people room to tell their stories without immediately correcting, advising, or comparing.

• Make room at the table. Invite someone into a conversation, meal, activity, or friendship, especially when they may feel like an outsider.

• Offer practical hospitality. Bring a meal, give someone a ride, help with childcare, share a resource, or check on someone who is struggling.

• Disagree without diminishing. Speak honestly while protecting the other person’s dignity. A safe relationship does not require agreement, but it does require respect.

• Interrupt exclusion. Speak up when someone is mocked, ignored, stereotyped, or treated unfairly.

We share God’s welcome whenever we help another person experience this truth: “You are seen. You have dignity. There is room for you here.”

The ministry of St. Augustine does not end when we walk out the doors. In many ways, that is where it begins.

God of boundless welcome, send us into the world with open hearts, attentive spirits, and the courage to make room for others. Help us share the love we have received from you. Amen.
