Volunteering is a Health Plan, Part 1

Letter From the Pastor

Proverbs 11:25 Generous persons will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

Volunteering is a Health Plan, Part 1

Summary: Scientific studies show that volunteering is healthy.

This Sunday is Volunteer Appreciation Sunday. Please join us as we celebrate all the work it takes to operate our church. In addition to sharing the Way of Love with Placer County, there is another reason to volunteer. Volunteering adds to your health. Both scripture and science teach us that helping others leads to physical strength.

Many studies have been conducted over the last few years that show that volunteering is scientifically healthy. A study published in Health Psychology (2013) found that older adults who volunteered regularly reduced the risk of dying by 22%. It suggested that giving time contributed directly to better health. Another study done in 2020 related to increased happiness and life satisfaction, meaning that volunteering was good for our mental health and fought anxiety, stress, and depression. Then another study published in Psychology and Aging in 2013 found that adults over 50 who volunteered at least 200 hours a year were less likely to develop high blood pressure. This led to less heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular disease.

Volunteering is good for your physical and mental health. Volunteering can reduce depression, increase happiness, lower blood pressure, give you a longer life, improve your social connections, and reduce the risk of dementia. God must have known what God was doing when God encouraged us to volunteer.

Stay tuned for next week when I show how scripture teaches us that volunteering leads to health.

May you be strong and healthy,

Pastor Anny Genato+
