What Can We Count On?

Dear Beloved,

Lately, I have noticed something beneath many of the conversations I have with people. We talk about inflation, politics, artificial intelligence, immigration, world conflicts, or the economy. Those are important conversations, but I suspect they are not the deepest ones.

Beneath them is another question.

"What can I count on anymore?"

We are living in an age of uncertainty. Psychologists have long observed that people can endure remarkable hardship if life makes sense, if the rules seem fair, and if tomorrow feels somewhat predictable. What wears us down is not simply suffering. It is uncertainty.

When people cannot predict the future, anxiety grows. We become more fearful. We begin dividing the world into "us" and "them." We look for simple answers to complex problems. We are tempted to place our hope in anyone who promises certainty.

The Bible knows this feeling well.

After God led Israel out of slavery in Egypt, they entered the wilderness. They no longer lived under Pharaoh's oppression, but they also did not know what tomorrow would bring. They worried about food, water, safety, and the future. They wanted certainty more than freedom. Yet God did not hand them a map with every stop along the journey. God gave them enough for each day: manna, water, a cloud by day and fire by night. Most importantly, God gave them God's presence.

I think that is still how God works.

The gospel never promises us a stable economy or a predictable world. Jesus never says history will be free from hardship or uncertainty. Instead, Jesus reveals a God whose love remains constant through every season. The character of God does not change when the headlines do. God's compassion is still compassion. God's mercy is still mercy. God's faithfulness is still faithfulness.

That is why my hope is not rooted in circumstances. It is rooted in the One who walks beside us. I cannot predict tomorrow, but I know the God who will meet me there.
