The Courage of Nonviolent Love

Matthew 5:39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also.

Summary: After a difficult community meeting, I have been reflecting on Jesus’ call to practice courageous nonviolent resistance rooted in love.

Dear Beloved Community,

This past week my mind has returned again and again to our community meeting. Many of you know it was intense. The words spoken in that room carried anger and fear. I have spent the days since then praying, reflecting, and asking what it means to follow Jesus in moments like that.

Again and again I have found myself returning to Jesus’ teachings about nonviolent resistance.

When Jesus speaks about turning the other cheek, giving one’s cloak, or going the second mile, he is not telling people to accept injustice or abuse. He is describing a way of confronting harm without becoming people of harm ourselves. Jesus invites us to refuse the cycle where anger produces more anger and violence produces more violence.

In the world of Jesus’ time, these teachings were startling. Turning the other cheek was not about submission. It was about dignity. It was a way of standing before another person and saying, I will not mirror the violence you bring. I will remain grounded in the love of God.

This kind of strength is not weakness. It is spiritual courage.

Jesus knew that systems of power often rely on intimidation and fear. Nonviolent resistance exposes those systems because it refuses to play by the rules of domination. Instead it responds with truth, dignity, and love.

That is the path Jesus walked. He spoke truth. He challenged injustice. He healed and restored people pushed to the margins. Yet he never surrendered to hatred.

I am still holding the pain of last week in my body. Perhaps some of you are too. But I also believe our calling is clear. We continue to show up with courage. We continue to stand in truth. And we continue to choose love, even when it is difficult.

That is the way of Jesus.

And it is the way we will walk together,

Pastor Anny+

Prayer God of courage and compassion, ground our hearts in your love so that we may face conflict with dignity, truth, and peace. Teach us to walk the way of Jesus in all we say and do. Amen.
