We Are Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses

Hebrews 12:1 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us."

Summary: On All Saints' Day, I am reminded that we never walk our journey of faith alone, but are surrounded by the love, courage, and witness of those who have gone before us.

Dear Living Saints,

Have you ever noticed how certain people stay with you long after they are gone? Maybe it's something your grandmother used to say, a lesson a teacher taught you, or the kindness of someone who believed in you when you couldn't believe in yourself. Years later, you can still hear their voice. Their influence has become part of who you are.

I love that image because it reminds me of what we celebrate on All Saints' Day.

The writer of Hebrews describes us as being surrounded by a "great cloud of witnesses." What a beautiful image! We are not running this race of faith alone. Countless people have traveled this road before us, and their lives continue to encourage us.

When I think about the saints, I don't just think about people whose names appear on stained glass windows or church calendars. I think about ordinary people who loved extraordinarily well.

I think about the Sunday School teachers who patiently taught children about Jesus. The people who quietly prepared meals for grieving families. The courageous Christians who challenged injustice, even when doing so came at a great personal cost. And the faithful souls who showed up week after week, loving God and loving their neighbors.

Were they perfect? Good heavens, no! Neither are we. That's what I find so encouraging about the communion of saints. Holiness isn't about achieving perfection. It's about allowing God's love to shape our lives.

And here's something else I love. The cloud of witnesses isn't just a collection of memories. In our Christian faith, we proclaim that death does not have the final word. We belong to a communion that reaches beyond the boundaries of time and death, held together in the love of God.

All Saints' Day also invites us to consider our own lives. Someday, we will be someone's cloud of witnesses. What will they remember? What kind of love will we leave behind?

I hope they remember that we welcomed strangers, stood beside those who were hurting, worked for justice, and made room at God's table.

This Sunday, as we celebrate All Saints' Day, I invite you to remember the people who helped shape your faith. Give thanks for them. And then ask yourself one simple question:

Whose cloud of witnesses am I becoming part of today?

May we live so that God's love continues to shine through us, long after our earthly lives are over,

Prayer for the Week

Loving God, thank you for the saints who have shown me your love and helped shape my faith. Give me the courage, compassion, and grace to live in such a way that my life becomes a blessing to those who follow. Amen.
