Matthew 25:36 “I was sick and you took care of me.”

Summary: This week, we honor nurses whose daily work reflects the healing heart of God.
Dear People of Service,
This week is Nurse Week, and at St. Augustine we are doing something simple and sacred. We are going to two senior living communities to bless the hands that bless others. We will stand before nurses, caregivers, and staff, and we will name what is already true. Their work is holy.
When I think about nursing, I do not first think about a profession. I think about a calling that echoes throughout scripture. Again and again, we see a God who moves toward the sick, the vulnerable, and the hurting. Jesus touches those others avoid. He restores bodies and dignity. He sees people fully. Nursing lives in that same movement. It is the act of drawing near with compassion, skill, and presence.
Caring for the sick is not a side note in our faith. It is central. In the early church, Christians became known for tending to the ill, especially during plagues when others fled. Over time, that commitment shaped the very foundations of hospitals and organized care. What we now call nursing grew out of a belief that every person bears the image of God and is worthy of care.
This is why blessing hands matters. Hands lift, clean, comfort, and steady. Hands administer medicine and hold fear. Hands speak when words fall short. When we bless hands, we are not adding something new. We are recognizing what God is already doing through them.
I hope you will join me in seeing nursing not just as necessary work, but as sacred work. It is a living expression of love. It is the gospel made visible in quiet rooms and long shifts. It is mercy with a human touch.
May we learn from those who care for others so faithfully. And may we all find ways to become people whose hands carry healing into the world.
Blessings,
Pastor Anny+
