Living the verse Luke 12:15
Summary: Jesus warns us that one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.
How many times have we seen the license plate proclaiming John 3:16? For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
Now there is nothing wrong with this verse, per say, but if I were inclined to put a Bible reference on my license plate, I think I might choose one from this Sunday’s gospel. Luke 12:15.
15 And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”
Think of all the world’s problems that could be solved if we all took this one to heart.
It’s hard to avoid greed. We all want to be safe and comfortable, and that means different things to different people. So, I guess it makes sense, in a way, that the people who do not feel safe and comfortable on the “inside” seem to be the greediest.
So many Americans are worried that if someone else has something it will mean that they have less. But it doesn’t really work this way. When we live in community, if someone else has something, it means that we all have MORE.
God wants us to fill our lives with LOVE, not things. The more we care for others, the less stuff we seem to need. This week, when I want to buy something frivolous, I’m going to do something for someone instead. I’ll write a note, make a call, or sign up to volunteer. I hear the Salt Mine is looking for a few good people!
Will you join me in taking action against greed or “covetousness” this week?
