1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances

Summary: National Day of Prayer invites us to return to a shared practice that reshapes our hearts toward God and one another.
Dear People of Prayer,
Next week, on May 7, we observe the National Day of Prayer. I find myself reflecting not just on the act of praying, but on what happens to us when we pray together as a people. Prayer is not simply a private conversation with God. It is a way we are formed, shaped, and reminded of who we are.
When we pray, we step out of the illusion that we are in control of everything. We remember that we belong to God and to one another. Prayer reorients our lives. It softens our hearts. It calls us back to compassion, to justice, to hope.
I also believe prayer expands us. When we pray for our leaders, our communities, and even those we struggle to understand, something shifts within us. We begin to see others not as opponents, but as fellow human beings made in the image of God. Prayer does not remove the complexity of the world, but it anchors us in God’s presence as we face it.
On this National Day of Prayer, I invite you to be intentional. Set aside a few moments. Pray for our nation, yes. But also pray for your neighbor. Pray for those who are hurting. Pray for those whose voices are not often heard. Let your prayer be wide enough to hold both gratitude and grief.
And remember this. Prayer is not about saying the perfect words. It is about showing up. God meets us in our honesty, in our longing, and even in our silence.
I will be praying for you. I hope you will join me,

Prayer Loving God, draw us into your presence and shape our hearts through prayer so that we may reflect your love in the world. Teach us to seek you with honesty and to hold others with compassion. Amen.
