Loss & Backpack Sunday

St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church

  - A Safe Place for People Seeking God

Loss &

Backpack Sunday

About five years ago I lost my best friend. You know the type. She was the one who got the card that said, “You’ll always be my best friend…’cuz you know too much!” When something good or bad happened to me she knew about it. If it was bad, she listened and came carrying soup. If it was good, we’d sit and rejoice in the moment.

This wonderful friend came to me via my husband. He and Ellen had been friends for a few years and when I came along, she just tucked me under her wing and off we went. As you might imagine, her passing was bone-crushing for both of us.

When sadness hung heavy, we relied on our faith in God to bring us solace. We KNEW Ellen was with God. She had great faith and was a faithful church attendee, but it didn’t happen by chance.

Ellen’s family never attended any church, but she always had a longing to know about God. So as a freshman in college she began her own search. After trying several, she found one that matched her own interest in - welcoming all, giving much and not having to check her intelligence at the door.

Our dear friend passed before we came to St. Augustine, but I know she would have loved it. I think you may love it, too. You may be in need of solace, like we were, or you would like to be part of a positive community of seekers who understand they will never be perfect, but are interested in following the Word of God to the best of their ability.

Grieving, rejoicing, or just living life, St. Augustine will welcome you with open arms. Just like Ellen did for me.

This Sunday, August 25, we will have a special, fun Backpack Service. Kids of all ages, as well as those who teach them from preschool to college and beyond, are invited for a blessing. We hope the kids bring their backpacks and the adults whatever they carry when they go to school. It will be a fun service for children and adults alike. We have had preschool through college teachers attend and be blessed. So come join us!

Blessings Always.
