The Spirit Still Moves

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Summary: Pentecost reminds us that God’s Spirit is alive, moving among ordinary people, and continually creating connection, courage, and new life.

Dear People of the Church,

Pentecost is one of the great feast days of the Church, yet many people are not quite sure what it means or why we celebrate it. Sometimes it gets overshadowed by Christmas and Easter, but Pentecost is essential to our faith because it marks the moment the Church truly began.

Before Pentecost, the disciples were frightened and uncertain. Jesus had ascended, and they did not yet know what came next. Then the Holy Spirit arrived like wind and fire, filling ordinary people with courage, wisdom, and purpose. Suddenly, barriers broke down. People from different regions and languages could understand one another. The Spirit did not create uniformity. The Spirit created understanding.

That matters deeply to me.

Pentecost reminds us that God’s dream for humanity is not division, fear, or isolation. God continually draws people together across differences. The Holy Spirit empowers people who feel inadequate. The Spirit speaks through unlikely voices. The Spirit creates community where there was once separation.

We celebrate Pentecost because we believe God is still doing that work now.

I see Pentecost whenever people listen to one another with compassion. I see it when someone discovers the courage to serve, forgive, or begin again. I see it when a church chooses love over fear and welcome over exclusion. Pentecost is not simply a story about what happened long ago. It is the ongoing story of God breathing life into the world again and again.

The disciples thought their story was ending. Instead, God was just beginning something new.

Perhaps the Spirit is still beginning something new in us too,

Prayer Holy Spirit, breathe fresh life into our hearts and our church. Give us courage to love boldly, welcome generously, and follow where you lead. Amen.
